ice cream for health


Ice cream is a popular food in the world. Many people, especially children, like ice cream very much. Ice cream can be chosen as a nutritional alternative for children, but many people have wrong assumption that it is a cause of many diseases, example obesity and flu and cough. Ice cream is safe to consume because it contains rich composition of nutrient, such as water, carbohydrate, fat, protein, and other minerals which can make the body healthy.

In growth years, children need good and balanced foods. One of these is ice cream. Although it does not substitute milk, ice cream can be chosen as a nutritional alternative for children who do not like milk (lactose intolerance). High quality ice cream is made from dairy ingredients with high calories, protein, and fat content. Ice cream which is enriched in calcium helps bone and tooth formation in children, blood clotting, and so forth. For children, calcium can be obtained through food sources or other types of food, but it is obtained from ice cream which contains optimal level of calcium.

Ice cream is well known not only for its delicious flavor but also its content which has rich composition of nutrients, especially saturated fat content. This causes wrong assumption that ice cream can cause obesity. Ice cream should make body healthy with useful nutrient contents and supply energy for the body. It does not cause obesity. Obesity is caused by excessive calories and fat intake, physical inactivity, poor eating habits, and hereditary factors. Whereas, the content of energy in one cup of ice cream is only about 10% of total energy requirement and content of fat is about 15% of total fat requirement. This is small. The right consumption of ice cream will be profitable to the body because ice cream contains a lot of calories. But many people do not pay attention to the calories needed by their own body. This causes obesity. So, before we eat ice cream, we must calculate calories content of ice cream and total calories requirement. Furthermore, ice cream should be taken after eating a stale food and main food.

Many people think that ice cream can cause cough and flu. In fact, ice cream may be used for flu medicine. People require consuming large amount of fluid to avoid dehydration. Ice cream contains a lot of water, so it can be used as a source of body fluid which will greatly help the healing process. Of course, it is not the main source to build body fluid. Upper acute respiratory system infection in children, such as nasal congestion, flu, sore throat would occur if the condition of unfit body is infected by viruses or other pathogenic bacteria. An excessive consumption of ice cream may bring flu condition to cells along upper respiratory and digestive system. That condition makes the cilia become less active to protect any invasion of viruses and other microorganism. So, consuming ice cream does not cause problem for the body as long as the body is fit and healthy. However, it must be remembered that ice cream must be hygienic, healthy nutritious, biological and chemical safe. Ice cream should be avoided by people with sore throat, tonsillitis, or asthma. Those diseases may recur if triggered by cold temperature.

So, ice cream can be chosen as a nutritional alternative for children and it does not cause obesity, flu and cough if it is consumed in a rational amount or not excessive. For low calories diet, people must choose ice cream with low content of fat and sugar and consuming ice cream with a rational amount. People with asthma, tonsillitis, lactose intolerance should limit or avoid consumption of ice cream. Note the label to know the composition of substances and nutrients content in ice cream, look at the ingredients before enjoying ice cream, and save ice cream in freezing temperature to maintain the safety.
